Aluminium expertise
A few weeks ago, we carried out a survey of an ELFE 8 aluminum catamaran. This aluminum sailboat was designed by naval architect Bernard Veys and built by the Mecasoud shipyard in Guérande. This model was produced in a limited series, with only six units built.
Measuring 7.99 meters in length and 4 meters in width, the ELFE 8 has a draft of 0.70 meters, giving it excellent access to shallow anchorages. Its marine-grade aluminum structure is robust and resilient.
We intervened on this boat at the request of its owner who wanted to check the good condition of the structure as well as the correct installation of the anodes, before putting it up for sale.

Ultrasonic thickness measurements
To verify the hull's condition, we performed thickness measurements using an ultrasonic (US) device. This non-destructive method allows us to determine if the aluminum exhibits areas of thinning due to corrosion or wear. Measurements taken at various strategic points on the hull confirmed its good condition.
This also allowed us to highlight the different sheet metal points used for the construction of the structure.
Anode continuity check
The cathodic protection system plays a crucial role in protecting the hull from electrolytic corrosion. We verified the electrical continuity of the sacrificial anodes to ensure they are functioning correctly.
The electrical continuity of the anodes is checked using a multimeter. This is to ensure that the electric current flows freely between the anode and the structure.
These measures revealed a faulty assembly of the cable of the hardened anode located in the anchor locker.
Aluminum structures require periodic inspections to ensure there are no corrosion or electrolysis issues. This is an activity we perform at ANEMO and for which we are equipped.
